World Social Media Day 2023:PLABOMA Online Discussion

The Plateau Bloggers and Online Media Association successfully hosted an engaging Online Discussion to celebrate World Social Media Day 2023, focusing on the theme “Uniting the Digital World.” The virtual event, held on Friday, June 30th, brought together prominent figures in the field of information and communication to share valuable insights and perspectives on the role of social media in Plateau State’s evolving Information Technology landscape.

 

The esteemed panel of discussants included Mr. Datong Dominic Gwaman, the Director General Designate of the Plateau State Information Communication Technology Development Agency (PICTDA), Mr. David Daser, the Immediate Past Director General of PICTDA, and Rachel Nuhu Birma, a renowned Social Media Influencer, CEO of RNB Blog, and a dedicated advocate for gender equality and peace.

 

The thought-provoking online discussion centered on how social media can serve as a powerful tool for connecting people and fostering unity in today’s digitally interconnected world. Mr. Datong Dominic Gwaman emphasized the significance of social media platforms in today’s society and stressed the importance of utilizing them positively to drive growth and development.

 

Mr. David Daser, reflecting on his tenure as the DG of PICTDA, discussed how social media users can leverage these platforms to build meaningful relationships, facilitate dialogue, and foster a sense of belonging in the digital realm. He also spoke on the need for organizations like the Plateau Bloggers and Online Media Association to address the issue of fake news effectively.

Rachel Nuhu Birma, known as a gender and peace advocacy and her influential work as a social media personality, emphasized the role of social media in amplifying marginalized voices and promoting social justice on a global scale. She encouraged marginalized groups to harness the wide reach of social media to share pressing issues and create awareness for outreach initiatives.

 

Other notable speakers who contributed to the conversation included the Acting General Manager of the Plateau Radio Television Corporation (PRTVC) and a Member of the Board of Trustees for Plaboma, Mr. Yakubu Taddy. He highlighted ongoing efforts to ensure that the state’s broadcasting station is well aligned with social media platforms to maximize their impact.

Mr. Gyang Bere, the newly appointed Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Executive Governor of Plateau State, expressed concern about the prevalence of misinformation and disinformation on social media platforms in Plateau State. He urged users to refrain from such practices as they mislead innocent citizens.

Mr. Godwin Okoko, representing a civil society organization, urged the Plateau Bloggers and Online Media Association to intensify their efforts in sanitizing the social media space in Plateau State, as they are well positioned to do so.

Comrade Friday Bako, Chairman of the Plateau Bloggers and Online Media Association, called for partnerships with various groups and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to engage in conversations that foster learning and knowledge-sharing among online experts. He emphasized the significance of understanding the impact of social media and exploring how technology can further unite individuals and communities in the digital realm.

The successful Online Discussion organized by the Plateau Bloggers and Online Media Association served as a platform to inspire dialogue, collaboration, and innovation, highlighting the pivotal role of social media in uniting the digital world and driving positive change.
